This latest version of Enigmacross includes Crossdown Quotebank. This basic program tests early arithmetic skills, but design quirks and runtime errors spoil the fun. TopMath's basic, easy-to-use interface provides five difficulty levels and uses graphics to present questions. The program generates random addition and subtraction questions, and kids can quickly answer 7 typing the letter that corresponds to the answer, typing the answer in the provided field, or clicking the milk bottles.
Unlike similar learning tools, TopMath doesn't let you choose the numeric ranges and it doesn't tackle any other math skills such as multiplication and division.
All levels are time-driven and final scores are revealed at the end of each test. Disappointingly, you won't see a breakdown of correct and incorrect answers, which would push this up a notch as a learning tool. As an example of its quirky behavior, during testing, the scoreboard revealed our final score of 100 percent at the end of Level 1.
At the end of the second level, however, it displayed 1090 percent. Additionally, occasional runtime errors appeared and instantly terminated the program.
You'll only have seven days to try out this program. That's long enough, as design flaws, stability issues, and a narrow focus will leave parents looking for a more competent and robust teaching tool for their preschool and grade-school children.
